Limerick BioPharma, located in South San Francisco, is working on new approaches to targeted therapeutics. We are developing small molecule modulators of cell membrane-bound transporters. Our intents are to i) improve existing therapeutic agents and ii) provide innovative therapies that address multiple unmet medical needs. Our proprietary Activators enhance the safety profile of marketed drugs (for example immunosuppressants) and expel excess lipid in metabolic disease states.
Our Activators differentially target ATP-binding cassette (ABC) Transporters in specific tissues and organs. When used adjunctively with specific drug ligands, our molecules regulate ligand distribution into tissues. For monotherapeutic applications, some Limerick Activators target diseases such as hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. Our technology shifts the paradigm in how we think about ABC Transporters.
The company was founded as Limerick Neurosciences in late 2004 by four seasoned industry scientific executives. Their original hypothesis, that opioids could be redirected away from the brain stem to reduced toxicity, was supplanted by a broader hypothesis of generalized tissue protection from toxic substances. Our new name – Limerick BioPharma – expresses the expanded scope of our vision for Activator-based therapeutics. With focused and growing expertise in activating ABC Transporters, we are building franchises in immunosuppression and metabolic disease. We also continue to explore new therapeutic opportunities.
In summary, Limerick BioPharma has harnessed the concept of ABC Transporter Activation. We continue to fulfill our original mission - to protect organs by helping vulnerable cells pump out toxic substances – but our vision has become much larger.
